Today marks the Little Cold, the penultimate solar term in the 24 solar terms, signaling the onset of the coldest period of the year. At this time, the cold air has accumulated for a long time, and although it has not reached its extreme, it already shows the biting cold of winter. There is a folk saying that "Little Cold is worse than Great Cold, and it's common rather than rare", which fully demonstrates its coldness.

The customs of Little Cold are distinctly regional. In the north, there is often a rudimentary form of "Lazi Jie" (a traditional Chinese festival to celebrate the end of the lunar year), where people prepare New Year goods and offer sacrifices to ancestors, reflecting on the past. In the south, it is popular to cook glutinous rice, which is boiled with ingredients such as bacon, sausage, and peanuts, producing a rich aroma. People believe that warm foods can help ward off the cold. Additionally, in many places, there is a custom of "counting the days until the end of winter" and taking tonics, such as eating mutton and drinking warm soup, to build up energy for the winter.

In the season of Little Cold, it is crucial to prioritize warmth for health maintenance. Special care should be given to critical areas such as the head, neck, and feet to prevent the invasion of cold pathogens. In terms of daily routines, one should aim to go to bed early and wake up late to ensure adequate sleep, aligning with the principle of yang qi being closed and hidden. Diet should primarily consist of warm and nourishing foods, with moderate consumption of ingredients like mutton, beef, and chestnuts, while avoiding raw, cold, and chilly foods. Additionally, due to the significant temperature difference between indoors and outdoors, it is important to maintain proper ventilation to prevent respiratory diseases.

Although Little Cold is chilly, it also carries the expectation of bidding farewell to the old and welcoming the new. By following the rhythms of the solar terms to nurture our bodies and minds, we can gather strength amidst the cold winds and quietly await the arrival of spring. May everyone be accompanied by warmth and enjoy good health and smooth progress during this Little Cold season.
