Today's Grain Rain is the sixth solar term among the 24 solar terms and the last solar term of spring, usually between April 19th and 21st in the Gregorian calendar. Grain rain is derived from the meaning of "rain produces a hundred grains", which implies that spring rain is abundant, nourishes the five grains, and all things enter a stage of vigorous growth.
There is a folk legend about the origin of Guyu, where Cangjie created characters. According to legend, after Cangjie successfully created writing, the sky brought sweet rain and abundant grains, and the sky brought rain of millet to nourish the land and farmland. People named this day Guyu. Since then, Grain Rain has symbolized harvest, hope, and cultivation, and is also one of the most important solar terms in agricultural civilization.
During the Grain Rain season, the temperature rises rapidly, precipitation increases significantly, the air becomes humid, and the cold wave completely ends. This is the golden period for spring sowing, planting, and field management. There are also many customs of Grain Rain in the folk: picking Grain Rain tea, appreciating peonies, worshiping Cangjie, eating fragrant Chinese toon, and taking a walk in Grain Rain. At this time, peonies are in full bloom, so peonies are also known as "valley rain flowers".
At the same time, Guyu is also a transition point between spring and summer, where moisture gradually increases. Folk customs pay attention to dispelling dampness and promoting health, as well as a light diet to regulate the body according to the season. Rain moistens all things, late spring is coming to an end, summer is approaching, may the world have smooth winds and rain, abundant grains, and all things go smoothly and healthily.
