May 4th every year is China's "May Fourth Youth Day". The direct trigger of the May Fourth Movement was the diplomatic failure at the Paris Peace Conference. In 1919, after the end of World War I, as a victorious country, China had hoped to abolish unequal treaties and regain Germany's privileges in Shandong. However, Western powers ignored China's legitimate demands and decided to transfer Germany's rights in Shandong to Japan.
This news immediately ignited the anger of young students when it was transmitted back to China. On May 4, 1919, more than 3000 students from Beijing flocked to Tiananmen Square, holding high the flags of "competing for sovereignty abroad, punishing traitors domestically" and "abolishing the Twenty One Demands", and holding a grand march and demonstration. This movement quickly spread from Beijing to the whole country, with worker strikes and merchant strikes, forming a nationwide patriotic fervor, and ultimately forcing the Beiyang government to release arrested students, dismiss pro Japanese officials such as Cao Rulin and Zhang Zongxiang from their positions. In December 1949, after the founding of the People's Republic of China, the State Council of the Central People's Government officially declared May 4th as China Youth Day. From then on, May Fourth Youth Day became a fixed annual holiday for young people across the country, symbolizing the passion and responsibility of youth.
