May 4th every year is China's "May Fourth Youth Day". This festival originated from a magnificent patriotic movement in 1919, which not only changed the course of Chinese history, but also forged the spiritual backbone of generations of Chinese youth.

Historical background: The outbreak of the May Fourth Movement
The direct trigger of the May Fourth Movement was the diplomatic failure at the Paris Peace Conference. In 1919, after the end of World War I, as a victorious country, China had hoped to abolish unequal treaties and regain Germany's privileges in Shandong. However, Western powers ignored China's legitimate demands and decided to transfer Germany's rights in Shandong to Japan.
This news immediately ignited the anger of young students when it was transmitted back to China. On May 4, 1919, more than 3000 students from Beijing flocked to Tiananmen Square, holding high the flags of "competing for sovereignty abroad, punishing traitors domestically" and "abolishing the Twenty One Demands", and holding a grand march and demonstration. This movement quickly spread from Beijing to the whole country, with worker strikes and merchant strikes, forming a nationwide patriotic fervor, and ultimately forcing the Beiyang government to release arrested students, dismiss pro Japanese officials such as Cao Rulin and Zhang Zongxiang from their positions. Chinese representatives also refused to sign the Treaty of Versailles.

Core Spirit: Patriotism, Progress, Democracy, Science
The May Fourth Movement was a great intellectual enlightenment movement that nurtured the May Fourth spirit centered on patriotism, progress, democracy, and science.
Patriotism is the core. In the face of national crisis, the youth of that time were willing to sacrifice their lives to defend the dignity of the country with their flesh and blood. This spirit inspires generation after generation of young people to closely link their personal destiny with the destiny of their country.
Democracy and science are the flags. The pioneers of the May Fourth Movement advocated the use of vernacular Chinese instead of classical Chinese, opposed feudal ethics, shouted "Down with the Kong family shop", introduced "Democracy" and "Science", and attempted to transform old China from the ideological roots

The official establishment of festivals
In order to inherit and carry forward the glorious tradition of the May Fourth Movement, in 1939, the Northwest Youth Salvation Federation of the Shaanxi Gansu Ningxia Border Region designated May 4th as Chinese Youth Day.
In December 1949, after the founding of the People's Republic of China, the State Council of the Central People's Government officially declared May 4th as China Youth Day. From then on, May Fourth Youth Day became a fixed annual holiday for young people across the country, symbolizing the passion and responsibility of youth.
